Is your heel pain plantar fasciitis?

May 9, 2016

There is a good chance

that your heel pain is

plantar fasciitis.

It is the most common type of heel pain. It is caused by microscopic

muscle tear and inflammation in the ligament across the bottom of

your foot.

It is no wonder injury here is so common. When you run your heel

strikes the ground about 1500 times per mile with a force of 2-3 times

your body weight.

This –itis in your heel and foot is caused by overuse, muscular imbalance,

obesity, improper footwear, and/or tight lower body muscles.

Plantar fasciitis is frequently mistaken for other conditions with

similar symptoms. These include arthritis or a nerve problem such as

tarsal tunnel syndrome. The most common complaint with plantar

fasciitis is stiffness and pain in the morning or after resting. The pain

usually gets better after a few steps, but gets worse as the day progresses.

Other indicators include:

  • Pain that gets worse when you climb stairs or stand on your toes.
  • Pain after you stand for long periods.
  • Pain that gets better as you exercise but returns when exercise is completed.

Early treatment is the best way to avoid long term effects.

There are things you can do at home to DIY your plantar fasciitis treatment:

  • Apply ice by rolling an ice bottle under your arch
  • Stretch your calves and Achilles
  • Use soft arch supports
  • Replace worn shoes
  • Soak your feet or take an Epsom salt bath

There are additional treatments that can be performed by a licensed physical therapist.

These include:

  • Orthotic fitting for most effective arch support
  • Kinesio taping to take stress of the foot
  • Customized stretching and strengthening
  • Astym or augmentative soft tissue mobilization

We find Astym to be the most efficient and effective for long term pain relief and

correction. This treatment technique regenerates healthy soft tissues and removes

unwanted scar tissue. This addresses the real root cause of pain or movement restrictions.

Most patients experience a significant change in their symptoms after just three or four

visits.

Only certified Astym therapist can offer this therapy. These certified clinicians undergo

intensive training to get you the results you expect from Astym treatment.

Peak Potential Physiotherapy and Wellness in Collierville has the only certified Astym
