Simple Tips to Stay Healthy on Your Summer Vacation

June 7, 2017

Do you have a summer vacation planned?

Whether it’s a mini getaway here in Tennessee, or jetting off around the globe. . . A vacation should be a chance to relax, unwind, and completely enjoy yourself.

But, how many vacations start out with the best of intentions and end up with a week’s worth of regret when it comes to your health habits? If you have gone months and months sticking to a healthy lifestyle (especially if this is a big change for you), now is not the time to throw in the towel.

Late nights, crazy travel schedules, eating out, missed workouts, and a few extra cocktails can throw you off balance. But, you don’t have to come home from vacation and start back at square one.

I will be the first to tell you that indulging in a few special meals, or missing a day of exercise is NOT a cause for alarm. However, when one evening of “less healthy” choices turns into 7-10 days, it can be hard to get back on track once you are home.

From my own experiences, and a few tips from others, I have found some simple ways that help us all stay on track this summer.

So, I wanted to share with you the ways we can still enjoy and make the most of our vacations, without worrying about feeling like we have to be excessively strict or fall off the wagon all together.

Sneak in some exercise. . .

You don’t have to stick to your formal exercise plan while on vacation. It’s easy to take the stairs or park farther from an entrance to get a few extra steps.

Additionally, a new town can be a great place to walk and explore the sites by foot. Park the car just once and you will often save money on parking fees.

I know I don’t want to abandon my family and friends to find a secluded gym in a hotel. Get them in on the fun outdoors!

While swimming with the kids add in a few laps or race them. Take a long walk on the beach with your spouse searching for seashells. Or convince your friends to learn to paddle board with you.

As for eating, stick to moderation. . .

You can enjoy your favorite vacation foods and treats. Try to drink more water and fill your plate with veggies before indulging on the fries and dessert. You will feel full and won’t have room for too large of a serving.

Pay close attention to those you are with. Enjoy the conversation, special experiences you are sharing, and savor the cuisine. Focus more on the company and less on your plate and you will find you are full sooner than you may realize.

Relax a little. . .

Destressing during a summer vacation is the healthiest choice of all. Don’t worry about the food and exercise habits you have at home. They will be there when you get back.

Sleep more, read a book, listen to music, enjoy your family. . . This will have a tremendous impact on your overall health.

Enjoy yourself on your summer vacation. . .try to move every day, indulge at little, take a break, and don’t beat yourself up over the choices you make!
